Ultralearning by Scott H Young - Book Summary

Why should you - what's in it for you?
1. That thing you always wanted to be able to do
2. The confidence you get to go after other things once you've accomplished something.

How?

Principle Practice
Metalearning (Always) drap a map - do research; try to connect what it is you're trying to learn with what you already know. Remember James Marcus Bach's buccaneer - k attracts k :)
Focus Carve out chunks of time and cultivate self awareness
What have you procrastinated on? Why?
Does the music really help or just make it less unpleasant to do something difficult?
Directness Learn by doing - this is the key to Israeli success. If you want to build an app, do it. Don't study how to it :) With languages - immersion..
Drill Practice the skills that make up the competence - focus on the weak points so that the average keeps rising
Retrieval Use spaced repetition - ankiweb, etc
Testing right after being exposed to the material might not be very effective - give yourself some time to forget. When doing the Coursear, might be a good time to be putting stuff into Anki :)
Feedback Seek it out - beware of making the measure the goal
Intuition
Experimentation Remember Masutatsu Mas Oyama - the true essence of the martial way can only be realized through experience. Knowing this, learn never to fear its demands

Some other tidbits :

Van Gogh was a failed art dealer and a notoriously difficult guy to be around. Once he decided to try his hand at creating art, he really dove into it - all the home study courses - Charles Bargue's Charcoal Exercises and Drawing Course, and Armond Cassagne's Guide to the ABC's of Drawing.

"I have now finished all 60 sheets" (in a fortnight!)

Copying was a strategy he used to build expertise - copying Jean-F Millet's The Sewer over and over again.

Fostering the environment :

Create an inspiring goal. Let people set their own inspiring goals.
Be wary of competition. If you find your skills too lacking, it might hurt motivation.
